Artecinema, European Premiere
|
We had an amazing screenings of my new documentary Krzysztof Wodiczko: The Art of Un-War at Teatro San Carlo. This was our European Premiere at the 27th Artecinema -a Festival for art documentaries in Naples Italy. We screened opening night October 13th. The beautiful Teatro San Carlo is the oldest opera house in the world and is absolutely spectacular 🤩.
It was one of the best screenings we've had thus far (next to National Gallery of Art in April where we had our East Coast Premiere.) The audience in Naples was super receptive. Often we were stopped on the street and people would comment about the film.
The staff at Artecinema were warm and kind and we were met with welcoming hospitality.

March 2022
Krzysztof Wodiczko: The Art of Un-War will be the closing film at The International Festival of Films on Art (Le FIFA) Sunday, March 27, online, 7:00 pm to midnight. A co-presentation with Esse and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC). Lesley Johnstone, Chief of Exhibitions at MAC sat down with Krzysztof Wodiczko and nevfor a special interview.
From Le FIFA festival “The festival will be ending in a few days. We are currently living in a global situation that was unthinkable only a few short weeks ago. The war going on in Ukraine reminds us of the fragility of the political balance of power and the suffering and pain that tipping the balance can lead to. Artists have always denounced abuses of power and repression of freedom of expression. Artists are essential: they remind us of all the distress that war can engender, and they preserve the strength of our humanity. It is with this in mind that we have chosen to close this edition of Le FIFA with the film THE ART OF UN-WAR by Maria Niro, about the artist Krzysztof Wodiczko. Through his public projections, this Polish-born artist denounces the glorification of war through the very monuments that celebrate it, revealing the trauma that it visits upon individuals. This poignant film once again demonstrates the power and importance of art in our lives.” - Jacinthe Brisebois, Director of Programming of FIFA |
I'm very thrilled that my feature documentary THE ART OF UN-WAR featuring Krzysztof Wodiczko and his political urban interventions was selected by SEBASTOPOL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL SDFF 2022. The Art of Un-War documentary chronicles the life and political work of the internationally acclaimed artist Krzysztof Wodiczko.
Wodiczko's lifelong investigation of the relationship of war and trauma is intimately explored through his public projections and urban art interventions created over the past fifty years. A pioneer of large scale projection art, Wodiczko's unique projections onto monuments and facades challenge our complacency towards war, xenophobia and displacement. Filmed with unprecedented access, this rare glimpse into the artist’s world stands as a permanent document of his thought-provoking and inspiring work.
Narrated by Krzysztof Wodiczko, and in conversations artist / activist Dread Scott, artist / writer/ activist Gregory Sholette, media artist Ani Liu, art historian Rosalyn Deutsche , artist Ewa Harabasz, curator Bozena Czubak of Fundicia Profile, curator Micaela Martegani of More Art, and Mary Sabatino of Galerie Lelong & Co. Through colleagues and fellow artists activists, we come to know Wodiczko as an empathetic media artist with a deep commitment to exposing the travesties of war and its aftermath.
